Asylum seekers

Definition: Helping the integration of asylum seekers. Depending on the official status of the asylum seeker – an extremely complex area, with variations between Member States – assistance may be for new ways of helping to access the labour market, or to provide training for unsuccessful asylum seekers prior to their leaving the country

Theme I partnerships were set up to support asylum seekers, and have encompassed innovative methods of teaching ESOL, developing ways of auditing and assessing the skills of asylum seekers, capacity building for voluntary organisations, and activities directed at helping asylum seekers to support each other.

ATLAS (Action for Training and Learning for Asylum Seekers) Round 2 >> Background Scotland continues to see its biggest demographic change since 1945, and although Scotland has a tradition of welcoming refugees, this scale of influx has placed many and varied demands on all major public and private services, not least education and employment services. ATLAS Scotland - Action for Training and Learning for Asylum Seekers >> Aim The aim of the ATLAS Development Partnership (DP) was to contribute towards an employment strategy for asylum seekers through a partnership approach, and to develop a model which added value to the UK dispersal policy by ensuring a holistic response in Scotland to the needs of the target group. EASI - Empowering Asylum Seekers to Integrate >> Background     Consisting of 14 organisations, the Empowering Asylum Seekers to Integrate Development Partnership (EASI DP) aims to tackle discrimination in the labour market. Projects (1), products (1)

LASAR - Liverpool Asylum Seeker And Refugee >> The aim of the LASAR (Liverpool Asylum Seeker & Refugee) DP Was to develop a co-ordinated and innovative approach to help with the integration of Asylum Seekers and Refugees (AS&R) into the local community. Projects (1), products (5)

North London Aspire >> Background   Asylum seekers face barriers to participating in society that include poor English language skills, a lack of knowledge about the UK welfare system, discrimination, no right to work, and isolation from their peer groups. Projects (2), products (4)

Accreditation and Employment Skills >>Anniesland College piloted an Accreditation of Prior Education and Learning (APEL) model as a form of fast track accreditation for asylum seekers who had previously worked as motor vehicle mechanics.

Advocacy Plus >> Volunteer advocates have been receiving intensive training in providing extended advocacy support to vulnerable asylum seekers with complex needs.

Arts: Asylum Stories through Theatre >> Banner has been creating a new multimedia documentary theatre production based on the real life experience of asylum seekers in Birmingham.

Arts: Women in Art and ESOL Through Art >> Two successful projects based around arts and crafts are Women in Art, run by the Community Integration Partnership (CIP), and ESOL Through Art, run by Matthew Boulton College.

Assign - Mentoring Project >> Assign ensures that asylum seekers have the continued opportunity to take part in a meaningful, inclusive programme that not only increases their employability but enables them to integrate pro-actively within the local community, with training developed to meet their needs.

Asylum Positive Images Programme >> The project seeks to embed and develop positive messaging exploring the notion of a safe haven from persecution.

Asylum Positive Images Project >>The project has conducted extensive media monitoring research in conjunction with Glasgow Caledonian University.

Baseline Study of Asylum Seekers Household >>This project was designed to complement an update of a 1998 North Glasgow baseline survey of residents and businesses commissioned by North Glasgow Social Inclusion Partnership (SIP).

Bridges Project >> The Bridges project has been working with asylum seekers with professional or employment backgrounds but with a minimum intermediate standard of English.

British Red Cross Orientation Service >> This orientation service ensures that the most vulnerable asylum seekers have fair and equal access to social care services.

Camden Libraries Refugees Work Experience Project >> The Camden Libraries Refugees Work Experience project recruited, trained and mentored refugees through structured work experience placements in Camden Libraries.

Capacity Building for Careers Advisers >>Glasgow North Ltd and Scottish Enterprise Glasgow Social Justice Transition Team took on a piece of action-based research to address a gap in the provision of guidance to asylum seekers and refugees from highly skilled / professional backgrounds.

Capacity Building Project >>‘Awareness-raising’ workshops to highlight the problems faced by asylum seekers arriving in Scotland were delivered by staff members with input from ESOL (English Speakers of Other Languages) teachers and, in some cases, by asylum seeker students.
