Ethnic minorities

Definition: Opportunities to promote potential for ethnic minorities within the world or work, by combating racism and xenophobia in relation to the labour market.

Theme B partnerships were about the employment opportunities of ethnic minorities and have covered a wide range of employability, job-creation and diversity work. Partnership topics have ranged from positive action programmes and diversity help for employers to tackling barriers faced by refugee and migrant communities. Products include marketing and information websites in the creative industries, toolkits on the benefits of diversity, policy and practice reports on employment and diversity, and diversity learning materials and qualifications.

Curiad Calon Cymru >> Background The Curiad Calon Cymru (CCC) Partnership came about when AWEMA mooted two focus group workshops to invite 40 organisations from the academic, voluntary and public sectors to attend. Projects (6), products (1)

EMPOWER - Ethnic Minorities Participating On Wider Economic Responsibilities >> Aim The main aim of the EMPOWER DP was to raise awareness of the employment opportunities available within the heritage and environment sector to Black and Minority Ethnic communities in Scotland. Projects (5)

Empower Scotland >> Background Ethnic minorities make up 2% of Scotland's population, but the unemployment rates are disproportionate. Projects (3), products (1)

Healthcare ESOL >> Background The work of this DP relates to two vital Government strategies: increasing the number of employees in the National Health Service (NHS) and social care providers in England, and tackling the differentials between ethnic groups in the labour market. IMPACT Ascend - Innovation Means Prisons And Communities Together >> Background Members of the Black and Minority Ethnic (BME) community are twice as likely to be unemployed than the general population. Projects (8), products (9)

KCBMEB - Knowledge Centre on Black and Minority Ethnic Businesses >>The aim of the Knowledge Centre on Black and Minority Ethnic Businesses (KCBMEB) DP was to develop new models and tools for making business support more accessible to ethnic businesses.

PRESTO - The Partnership for Refugee Employment through Support, Training and On-Line Learning >> Background The PRESTO DP aims to test and disseminate innovative approaches to training and employment packages to support and improve the employment prospects of refugee professionals specifically in the Health, Education and Engineering sectors. WBGB - Working Broadband GB >> Aim The aim of the Working Broadband GB DP was to assist people from diverse communities to enter and progress in the Creative and Technology sectors, using current and future developments in broadband to reduce unemployment and providing economic advancements for people from BME communities to improve employment prospects. Access to Film/TV >> WFA Media and Cultural Centre operates cooperative work and management practices and offers a variety of media production and training services.

Accessing management opportunities gateway (AMOG) – City of Bradford Metropolitan District Council >>Bradford Council successfully developed an initiative to provide work placement opportunities for graduates to gain relevant management experiences.

Advice Guides >> As the PRESTO partnership included both refugee agencies and mainstream organisations, RAGU felt it was important to have a general guide for advisers that could provide the basic information that anyone working with refugee professionals would need.

An analysis of the employment experiences of Sikh women in West Yorkshire – Bradford Education and & Cultural Association of Sihks (BECAS) >>BECAS is a community-based organisation that was able to analyse the educational attainments and skill levels of targeted women from Black and Minority Ethnic communities.

Asian Women in Art >>This project is specifically targeted at Asian Women, working with an Asian woman, Fahana, as a role model and course director, who has experience in the arts (textiles) and in industry.
