Diversity in Practice

Description

Diversity in Practice Image

Background

Most employers are diversity aware however they seldom understand the commercial opportunities that are open to them if they proactively embrace positive diversity policies. Individuals from disadvantaged groups have been traditionally excluded from many job roles. The benefits of increasing inclusion is a case that still needs to be made explicit for all parties: for employers, for the public sector and for individuals.

Aims

The DP aims to design, develop, implement and evaluate a range of models and methods of engaging employers in the diversity process and unlocking the potential of individuals. These models are designed to demonstrate the benefits of increasing inclusion of a broad range of social groups through a range of methods, statistical models defining business performance, practical training and workshops, dissemination and raising awareness, case studies, mentoring and benchmarking.

Objectives

  • Develop a diversity strategy which effectively identifies and measures diversity

  • Increase their Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) and learn new solutions to develop and sustain CSR
  • Share best practice and case study insights
  • Position themselves at the forefront of business and social developments, ensuring their long term success.
Working with a wide range of individuals to:
  • Motivate and empower the long term unemployed to re-enter employment and develop strategies and tools to support them in this objective

Achievements

The Diversity in Practice project has, to date: Successfully run CSR events for businesses which have presented 200 organisations across Hertfordshire with contacts, information and access to existing tools, thus developing their awareness of CSR and supporting their implementation of CSR practices; Supported the development of a CSR membership group for businesses in Dacorum which has a current membership of 200 and has created a forum in which best practice and events can be shared and engagement with the voluntary and community sector improved; Involved businesses in think-tank sessions around diversity, designed to raise their awareness and inform the subsequent development of solutions, with particular relevance to disability accessibility.

The innovative work on the Disability Accessibility Framework that Exemplas has undertaken with Dacorum CVS is indicative of the opportunities that the project can offer the public sector. The consultation process which will inform the Strategy for Enterprise, Innovation and Employment for Disabled people has extensively researched the gaps in support for disabled people through events, surveys, interviews and mapping exercises. The findings of this will identify the gaps in provision across the Eastern Region and create a comprehensive network of support agencies, also providing the public sector with a focus for its work and the tools that will support this. The development of effective and strong communication networks is considered to be a sustainable and innovative achievement of the project.

Intended impact/ sustainability

As greater connections are made between marginalised groups, different types of organisations and information, resources and learning, Diversity in Practice hopes to become a central point of reference, supporting individuals to come together effectively.
