Business creation

Definition: Opening up the business creation process to all by providing the tools required for setting up in business and for the identification and exploitation of new possibilities for creating employment in urban and rural areas

Theme C partnerships focused on business creation and covered a wide range of support and materials for entrepreneurs and those providing support for business creation. Examples of work covered include training and support for disadvantaged and under-represented groups, support for women entrepreneurs and access to finance. Products include mentoring websites, research into business creation amongst excluded groups, case studies, materials and guides for mentors, DVD and CD materials, handbooks and qualifications.

Euro Enterprise Evolutions: Research >> Euro Enterprise Evolutions researches and tests innovative new ways of supporting and empowering people from disadvantaged groups to overcome barriers and start their own business.

Evaluation reports >> The evaluation reports for Partnership for Innovation and Enterprise Development Partnership (including transnational report) have been tagged under this activity for ease of reference.

Further Education Providers >> There are two Further Education providers who have both adapted and developed new and bespoke courses to address the needs of festival entrepreneurs: Southwark College Circus Media Centre (New Vic) The two FE providers have been delivering a broad range of courses supporting individuals to start their own businesses within the context of festivals and community events.

Gateway to Enterprise >> Gateway to Enterprise is a collaboration of partners from Poland, Germany, Portugal and the UK working to build sustainable economies through business start-up.

Gateway to Finance >> The Gateway to Finance programme supported social enterprises with a mixture of specialist workshops and up to two days of one-to-one consultancy.

Glaisnock Trust >>Glaisnock House was a derelict old house in the South of East Ayreshire council.

High Growth Portal >> The High Growth Portal is an interactive online solution for aspirational women to support them in business.

High Road Partners: Scarman Trust >> The Scarman Trust works at a local level to empower people and communities by creating opportunities for positive change through personalised support and development, pathways into work and learning, inclusive local decision making and change programmes, and releasing enterprise and cultural expression.

Icons - Integration Through Business Creation >> Over the last two years, all Icons projects have tested a range of innovative ways of working with disadvantaged groups to support them in setting up or developing new businesses - outlined in this booklet are four key ‘ICONS’ recommendations, which have been created from the projects’ findings.

Icons Branding >>The Icons Branding project has been targeting new businesses within rural South Lanarkshire and East Lothian to develop cultural tourism as part of the strategy to enhance regional GDP and new business activity.

Inclusion through Entrepreneurship (ITE) >>The partnership seeks to exchange information, models and tools to encourage enterprise creation.

Informal Economy >> This project aimed to help and encourage those existing businesses operating in the informal economy to recognise the commercial benefits of joining the mainstream business community.

Informal Networks >>This project is promoting a network development activity that recognises the value of word of mouth and trust in excluded groups by developing models that make use of links between formal and informal networks to give new access routes to specialist advice and loan finance.
