Social economy

Definition: Strengthening the social economy (the third sector), in particular the services of interest to the community, with a focus on improving the quality of jobs

Theme D partnerships concentrated on creating opportunities in the social economy and span work in both urban and rural areas, and with groups and organisations resourcing many social sectors. This involved work on local sourcing, research into social enterprise success factors, community work training and the development of social accounting tools. Products include web site directories, waste and recycling relating to community enterprises, learning materials on children and play, a guide on how to make access to public procurement real for social firms, toolkits, web sites, research, case studies, training courses and occupational standards and good-practice models.

Social Equity Scotland >> The project has been focusing on the following areas: defining what is meant by ‘social venture’, covering charities, revenue-generating social enterprises, socially driven businesses, legal structures and charitable status the ‘patient capital gap’ covering the need for additional types of risk capital, the influence of Futurebuilders Scotland and the developing market for loan finance in Scotland the social venture market in Scotland, covering the size of the market across Scotland and types of ventures that might be supported by investment capital.

Social Return on Investment (SROI) >> This pilot has been developing and testing approaches to SROI and identifying whether SROI is an applicable model for assessing the impact of investment funding.

South of Scotland >>The South of Scotland zone was split into two areas.

Supply side >> Partners have been working together to help social enterprises improve/increase the value of the public sector contracting they do.

The Ahoy Centre >> The Ahoy Centre was an exciting project offering sailing, power boating and rowing opportunities for all on London's River Thames.

The Archway Project >> Te Archway Project in Thamesmead, South East London was formed in 1982 as a voluntary organisation to work with young people.

The Learning Surgery Exploring Enterprise >> This programme is based in a converted Doctor's Surgery at West Cross in Smethwick.

The NET >> The NET is a project set up to evaluate the impact of faith-based organisations on regeneration and the social economy.

The Redhouse Project >> This project undertook community consultation to determine what issues to tackle.

The Riverwood Project >>The Riverwood project creates original furniture - made by people with a learning disability using driftwood from the Thames.

Third Angle >> Cultural Shift South East is part of an international partnership involving the UK, Poland and Italy.This partnership, known as the Third Angle, is undertaking joint learning in the very different context of the social economy in the three member states.

Third Sector Development >> The Third Sector is one of the top five employers in the London Thames Gateway, ahead of both manufacturing and construction, and yet the sector has still to reach its full potential according to two reports published in November 2006 by TGLP, A strategy for Building a world-class third sector in the London Thames Gateway and Building a world-class third sector workforce in East London.

TLC College Wolverhampton development activities >> The project has been offering a wide variety of activities for women of all ages, including child development, food hygiene, family activities and a Women's Club.

Town Centre Management Academy >>The newly created Institute of Place Management has been assisting individuals in the management, development of and marketing of places.

Trade Association for South West England >> Serving the West of England sub-region, the Trade Association is working to develop a stronger identity for social economy enterprises and support the key message of credibility for the social economy.

Trading Up >> This initiative has been piloting a comprehensive, targeted business growth service for social economy organisations/enterprises.

Training >>SEP-EQUAL worked with SFEDI and training experts to develop two new professional development programmes for business advisors to the social enterprise sector and social enterprise managers.

Transnational Project: @base >> All four partners in this transnational cooperation agreement (TCA) – which includes the development partnerships (DPs) of Agora (UK), YOUR SPIS (Slovakia), Europa House (Czech Republic) and Werk.Waardig (Belgium) – share a common conceptual area-based approach to the improvement of the quality of life of stakeholders and communities either directly, through existing social economy-based mechanisms and structures, or through social entrepreneurship elements of good practice present in the public and private sectors.

Transnational Project: ACME - Agora, Comurbano, Mercurio Equal >>Three DPs from two different Equal themes form the ACME transnational partnership: Agora from the UK (Theme D: social economy), and Comurbano and Mercurio, both from Spain (Theme F: adaptability).

VIVA Community Interest Company >> VIVA Community Interest Company offers cooperative solutions to the delivery of nursing and social care in the community.
