Portland Partnership

Partnership information

Description

Portland Partnership

Aim

The aim of the Portland DP was to enable Pre-Entry level learners with physical/mental disabilities and learning difficulties to use ICT to help them learn more autonomously. This can offer a more meaningful way for them to develop, practise and demonstrate their acquisition of basic/essential skills.

Objectives

The Portland Partnership established groups of learners from various colleges and has worked with individuals to ensure that they:

  • Had access to the most appropriate equipment and resources.

  • Had the opportunity to identify how they would like to learn and what they would like to learn.

  • Were invited to trial new materials produced and also the opportunity to pass their opinions on them.
Background

The inspiration for this project came from a group of practitioners who were no longer prepared to make do with resources designed for mainstream learners.

Learners and tutors have been involved in the development of all the project’s outputs. Discussions about initial ideas, focus groups, and the trialling and evaluation of prototypes have all provided unprecedented opportunities for learner and practitioner empowerment. For example, learners told us that one of their major frustrations was not being able to log on to a computer more independently. This led to the development of the accessible login screen for our online environment, which has been welcomed enthusiastically by learners and tutors alike.

Main outcome

The partners built on the foundations of the CTAD product Target Skills in order to produce a package of accessible ICT based materials in basic skills/essential skills. The materials are also appropriate to age and level.

The project has had a significant focus on access and enabling solutions for learners with physical accessing problems.
