Asian Women in ArtThe "ici" Partnership >>
Description
This project is specifically targeted at Asian Women, working with an Asian woman, Fahana, as a role model and course director, who has experience in the arts (textiles) and in industry. In this respect, Slough has been able to utilise a powerful role model and mentor drawn from its own community Asian arts programmes and activity. This was an important factor given some of the social and religious constraints that the women have to manage. The original focus was Muslim women, but Fahana broadened this to be Asian. There were early problems with recruitment but now some 50 women have been through Taster sessions, with a view to some progressing into OCN accreditation and employment. This has been a break-through project for some women and value-adding links have been made with the Women’s Forum for Social Enterprise run by Ramesh Kukar. This will build capacity within the community and empower some women to begin to work in the creative market place.
